چکیده

An approximate Steiner tree is a Steiner tree on a given set of terminals in Euclidean space such that the angles at the Steiner points are within a specified error from 120◦. This notion arises in numerical approximations of minimum Steiner trees. We investigate theworst-case relative error of the length of an approximate Steiner tree compared to the shortest tree with the same topology. It has been conjectured that this relative error is at most linear in the maximum error at the angles, independent of the number of terminals. We verify this conjecture for the two-dimensional case as long as the maximum angle error is sufficiently small in terms of the number of terminals. In the two-dimensional case we derive a lower bound for the relative error in length. This bound is linear in terms of the maximum angle error when the angle error is sufficiently small in terms of the number of terminals. We find improved estimates of the relative error in length for larger values of the maximum angle error and calculate exact values in the plane for three and four terminals. Approximating Minimum Steiner Point Trees in Minkowski

Given a set of points, we define a minimum Steiner point tree to be a tree interconnecting these points and possibly some additional points such that the length of every edge is at most 1 and the number of additional points is minimized. We propose using Steiner minimal trees to approximate minimum Steiner point trees. It is shown that in arbitrary metric spaces this gives a performance differe...

The Euclidean Steiner Tree Problem

The Euclidean Steiner tree problem is solved by finding the tree with minimal Euclidean length spanning a set of fixed vertices in the plane, while allowing for the addition of auxiliary vertices (Steiner vertices). Steiner trees are widely used to design real-world structures like highways and oil pipelines. Unfortunately, the Euclidean Steiner Tree Problem has shown to be NP-Hard, meaning the...

Geometric conditions for Euclidean Steiner trees in ℜd

We present geometric conditions that can be used to restrict or eliminate candidate topologes for Euclidean Steiner minimal trees in , d ≥ 2. Our emphasis is on conditions that are not restricted to the planar case (d = 2). For trees with a Steiner topology we give restrictions on terminal-Steiner connections that are based on the Voronoi diagram associated with the set of terminal nodes. We th...

A novel approach to phylogenetic trees: d-Dimensional geometric Steiner trees

We suggest a novel distance-based method for the determination of phylogenetic trees. It is based on multidimensional scaling and Euclidean Steiner trees in high-dimensional spaces. Preliminary computational experience shows that the use of Euclidean Steiner trees for finding phylogenetic trees is a viable approach. Experiments also indicate that the new method is comparable with results produc...
